Self-awareness (Emile Durkheim) is the ability to make observations of oneself, a condition of being aware of one's awareness.
Self-awareness is the explicit understanding that one exists.
It includes the concept that one exists as an individual, separate from other people, with private thoughts; the understanding that other people are similarly self-aware.
Comprising qualities: subjectivity, sentience, sapience, and the ability to recognize the relationship between oneself and one's environment.
In common parlance, consciousness denotes being awake and responsive to one's environment and contrasts with being asleep or being in a coma.
