Meaning of the word “perception” is receiving, collecting. Perception is the process of presenting through the sense organs. Senses are sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch.
Perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information.
Perception can be attended to or ignored. It cannot be terminated by an effort of will.
Perception is the basis of all science and knowledge (Merleau Ponty).
Cognitive theories of perception assume there is a poverty of stimulus. Sensations require enriching, which is the role of the mental model.
The ecological understanding of perception is perception-in-action, “perception and movement are two sides of the same coin - the coin is action” (D.N. Lee).
The neurophysiological processes include memory, by which an organism becomes aware of and interprets external stimuli.
The brain involved in sensory perception. The sensations reach perception only if received and processed by a cortical area. Commonly recognized sensory systems are those for vision, hearing, somatic sensation (touch), taste and olfaction (smell).
Receptive fields have been identified for the visual system, auditory system and somatosensory system.
Visual Area 1, or V1, is used for vision, via the visual system to the primary visual cortex. The primary visual cortex: striate cortex or V1/Brodmann area 17/BA17, located in and around the calcarine fissure in the occipital lobe. V1 transmits information to two primary pathways, the dorsal stream (begins with V1, through Visual area V2, then to the dorsomedial area and Visual area MT (also known as V5) and to the inferior parietal lobule (motion, representation of object locations) and the ventral stream (begins with V1, goes through Visual area V2, then through Visual area V4, and to the inferior temporal lobe; associated with form recognition and object representation; associated with storage of long-term memory).
