Operant conditioning is a technique of Behavioural therapy based upon the principles of classical conditioning.
Focus is on reducing of anxiety and avoidance behaviour.
Operant conditioning is based on the notion that a person has a range of potential responses that he or she will display in reaction to certain stimuli or events.
The kind of response emitted will be dependant on its reinforcement in the past, usually in the form of praise or attention.
It is used in the field of psychology to help effectively overcome phobias and other anxiety disorders, and develop relaxation skills in order to control fear and anxiety responses to specific phobias.
Two main ways of procedure:
* in imagination of the phobic situations, and
* in practice, in the actual situations.
Operant conditioning is recommended as the treatment for phobic disorders, a variety of anxiety disorders, especially Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
