Four techniques used to change cognitions are as follows:
* distraction, incl. “thought stopping” (attention away);
* neutralizing (reduce of the emotional impact, use a “prompt card”, the written reassuring thoughts);
* challenging (provides information, asking questions to change maladaptive over-generalize thoughts and beliefs);
* reassessing (of the clients’ beliefs which overestimate their responsibility for events, help to reassess their role by constructing pie charts that shows all the determinants).
The techniques emphasize the ability of people to make changes in their lives without having to understand why the change occurs.
